Comparison of LF and HF Radar Level Transmitter in Solid Material Measurement

The high-frequency radar level transmitter is the mainstream product in solid level measurement area. Such as: VEGA's VEGAPUL series; E + H's FMR series; SIEMENS's LR series, etc. The Chinese domestic brands such as Dechuang DCRD1000A series. In solid material level measurement, compared with the low frequency radar, the advantage of high frequency as follows:

1. The high-frequency radar level transmitter(mainly referring to 26GHz and 24GHz) is featured with high energy and small beam angle. For example, the beam angle of Φ95 horn antenna is 8°, the launch angle is 6 ° of the Φ123 horn antenna, the launch angle of Φ246 (usually parabolic) horn antenna is 4°. The smaller antenna size, the higher accuracy. While the low frequency radar is of low energy, energy dispersion and large launch angle, which cause bad directivity. The beam angle of Φ246 antenna radar of low frequency radar is 15 °. When the frequency is fixed, the bigger antenna, the smaller launch angle.

2. The wavelength of 26GHz radar is 11mm, while the wavelength of 6GHz radar is 50mm, when measuring the bulk material level, the radar wave reflect is mainly from the diffuse reflection of material surface, the irreflexive intensity is proportional to the material granule, and inversely proportional to the wavelength, that is, for the same material level, the shorter wavelength the more easily being reflected, thus the better radar echo signal in measurement. Under normal circumstance, the most of the bulk material diameter is far less than 50mm. Thus it’s the 26GHz radar level transmitter is ideal in level measurement.

3. Due to harsh measuring environment, the radar antenna will accumulate dirt and moisture, etc. The 26GHz radar antenna is in small size, and adding antenna housing can largely decrease the influence of dirt and moisture upon measuring result. While the 6GHz radar is too big to add antenna housing, and hard to clean as the instrument in large volume.

4. In solid material level measurement, the measuring range of 6GHz radar level transmitter is less than 30m, which can’t satisfy some application measurement( such as above 2500T/d cement plant). While the measurement range of high frequency radar level can reach 70m, or even 100m, which can totally satisfy the application need of large-scale cement production line.

5. As the HF radar is featured with good directivity and small launch angle, strong anti-jamming capability, which decide it’s very suitable for level gauging of silo with larger major axis, especially for calcium carbide furnace and converter silo. While the low and medium frequency radar is hard to meet measurement requirement.

6. Comparing with high frequency radar level transmitter, the LF radar product is of low frequency, energy dispersion, not focused energy. Thus the capacity to confront dust is much less than HF radar. In summary, the high frequency radar level transmitter is the ideal choice in solid material level measurement.
